India has made rapid progress in ending open defecation across the country, which has significantly impacted water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) outcomes. However, access to climate resilient and safely managed sanitation and hygiene services remains a challenge, especially for some marginalised groups in certain towns of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, two large states in the north of India. This is a challenge that is becoming increasingly important due to the consequences of climate change.

This is precisely where WaterAid India comes in by intelligently linking measures in the wastewater sector and water treatment.

WATERAID INDIA:

TWO STATES, ONE CHALLENGE.

WaterAid India (officially the Jal Seva Charitable Foundation) is an organisation that has been active in India since 1986 and focuses on the issue of water in all its facets: Drinking water, sanitation and hygiene. WaterAid has particular expertise in the area of community work and sets standards in terms of scaling through partnership and cooperation with governments, civil society organisations and the private sector. WaterAid contributes significantly to the development of the Indian WASH sector.

WaterAid is part of the global WaterAid network and is active in many Indian states.

The towns of Bakshi Ka Talab (Uttar Pradesh) and Akbarnagar (Bihar), which are relatively small by Indian standards, have an urban status as cities. However, local governance faces challenges to keep up with increasing demands of safely managing used water in a changing climate environment – from collection, disposal to proper treatment.

WATERAID INDIA:

TWO STATES, ONE CHALLENGE.

An important part of the WaterAid project is the development of a climate action plan together with the cities, the installation of decentralised wastewater systems and the conservation of water resources through wastewater treatment. Climate resilience in the region is improved by cleaning surface water and recharging groundwater. Training local workers and involving disadvantaged groups in the planning and implementation of measures are intended to strengthen local structures and create sustainable communities.

WaterAid India will share the lessons learnt from the project at both district and state level in order to give other cities the opportunity to improve their WASH situation as well.
