Ensuring safe sanitation and fostering a healthier environment remains a priority for many Indian cities amid growing populations and rapidly changing climatic conditions. Achieving this requires more than providing access to basic WASH infrastructure – it requires building ownership in the community, forward-looking plan to sustain and manage the assets, and changing the behaviors of people. WASH Institute is leading this effort, demonstrating climate-resilient and sustainable WASH solutions in Vedasandur. This project will serve as a model to be replicated for the region.

WASH Institute is a not-for-profit organization registered in 2008, providing technical & engineering services, capacity building, research & development, and community WASH services to a wide range of stakeholders – national, state, and local governments, industry, DFIs, philanthropies, and other NGOs. WASH Institute is dedicated to providing practical solutions to reduce risk to public health and the environment.

WASH Institute has a multi-disciplinary team of over 200+ employees with expertise in engineering, urban planning, policy and business models, capacity building, communication and behavior change.

WASH INSTITUTE:

Over 16,000 people live in the town of Vedasandur in the state of Tamil Nadu. Strategically located and well connected with other regions in the State, Vedasandur has become a daily bustling hub drawing workers, traders, and shoppers across the region. This increases solid waste, demand for public toilets, and the amount of wastewater (used water) discharged.

Vedasandur faces significant public health and environmental pressures. Kodaganar River, passes through Vedasandur and is polluted with the waste from the town. Climate change-driven extreme events like flooding and drought further exacerbate the situation. The need of the hour is climate-resilient WASH infrastructure and services to safeguard the town's public health and environment.

In Vedasandur, WASH Institute uses a data-driven approach to develop climate-resilient solid waste and wastewater systems and corresponding services. The solutions include infrastructure development, business models and behavioral change initiatives to create sustainable impact.

WASH Institute is initiating the construction of inclusive toilets, the installation of wastewater treatment plants and the emptying and treatment of septic tanks with a specially developed mobile solution. While improving the waste management system the project focuses on improving the health and safety of sanitation workers. Through these efforts, WASH Institute is fostering long-term environmental and public health improvements in Vedasandur.
